I recently completed a project with design challenges I have not faced to date. The biggest challenge…. I never met with my client as he resides in Indonesia and my budget was 30K to completely furnish a 1600 square foot condo in the heart of Seattle.

Challenge: The owner resides in Indonesia and provided a 30K budget to completely furnish the entire condo this included kitchen, dinner and flatware. Also part of the challenge was to take a modern built condo and create an interior that provides a welcoming, warm home for my client.

Solution: I provided my client inspirational photos so we would be speaking the same language with regards to style, color and texture. The space is dramatic with large windows, high ceilings and dark wood finishes throughout. Rather than choosing something that would fight with the boldness of the space and architecture, I have unified the elements with a neutral palette and accents of my client’s favorite colors. To keep on budget, I divided the space into zones creating a design plan before any purchases were made. I mixed products from the Seattle Design Center, local consignment shop as well as a few items overstock.com.

A special thank you to Carolyn Machetanz for her hours of assistance, she truly made this project FUN!

Before the photo shoot, I worked with a delightful Floral Designer at Willow & Bloom in the Fremont neighborhood. Miya Ferguson and her staff created the beautiful centerpiece for the coffee table using fabric swatches I provided for texture and color. Her shop is a jewel, filled with floral delights from around the world as well as charming gifts. www.willowandbloom.com

I feel it is important that someone address the illusions created by the home design programs that flood our TV screens. I must admit that some are interesting and fun to watch. But herein lays the problem: most viewers see the programming as real and factual, you know…the total makeover in 2 hours with a price tag of $1000. Great programming never revivals cost or time, for example Divine Design with Candice Olsen, she focuses on space planning, function and awesome details. I love that the design programs have inspired people to have fun, be creative and make their homes reflect their style; however, time and cost are far from realistic. One of the major roadblocks I face as a designer is when a client has the impression that 2 hours and $1000 will create a new home. Good design takes time, planning, thought and a budget. I understand we live in a world of fast food, instant gratification, high speed Internet…we want it NOW! But there are things that take time and the end results are amazing, for example an artist never rushes his painting. Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” is the result of creativity, planning, and thought; transferring the image from the artist eye to the canvas requires time. This is true of the designer as well, we share our creative inspirations plus we interpret the desires of the client. Now for the issue of cost, the design programs exclude the cost of labor and never mention they have loads of creative crewmembers e.g. carpenters, plumbers, painters, the list goes on, that make everything possible. It’s like magic! I recently attended a design presentation by David Bromstad of HGTV’s Color Splash, he confessed that his program has 16 creative crew members assisting him and rarely is his budget under $6000. It is wonderful that design programs are educating viewers to think outside the box but, there needs to be a reality check on time and cost. After all, MAGIC is really only smoke and mirrors!

WHAT’S YOUR STYLE? Traditional, Contemporary, Modern or perhaps Transitional…. everyone has a style. It may take some detective work to expose it, but believe me it’s there.

Traditional: Design preferences are influenced from 18th, 19th and early 20th century European and American furnishings, colors and textures.

Contemporary: Styles range from the later half of the 20th century. Defined by softened lines, neutral elements and a focus on line shape and form.

Modern: Features clean, streamlined furniture and an architectural style that is characterized by polished surfaces, strong geometric shapes and asymmetry.

Transitional: Marries traditional and contemporary furniture, finishes, materials and fabrics.

When working with my clients, I always want to know “what’s your style”. This seems to be difficult for many to articulate and here is where the detective work begins. I provide my clients with what I call “inspiration books” to assist in defining their style. Basically they are a collection of images grouped by style that create a visional impression according to the category e.g. Transitional, Contemporary, Modern, Transitional. It is a fun exercise that enables me to determine what my clients are drawn to… which is their style.

You can do this at home by looking at images in books, magazines and the Internet, tag what your eye is attracted. A pattern will develop in the images that have been tagged, there will be your style. It’s that easy! Have fun, be bold, explore color and live in your style.

I have discovered an amazing website I want to share with you, ColorSchemeDesigner.com. If you LOVE color, as much as I do, this site is super fun and can take the guesswork out of color relationships. It allows you to design a color palette from monochromatic, complimentary to triad. Altering colors by reducing pigment or adding tints and shades to control their value are at your fingertips. When selecting colors, I always look at all the components from flooring, furniture, textiles, tile and stone, everything should work together. It’s about color relationships. Color Scheme Designer is a great tool to assist when creating a design plan that includes color. Before I begin a project, I always create a design plan for my clients enabling them to see the big picture. Having all the components selected before a project begins, ultimately saves my clients time and money. Check out Color Scheme Designer and have fun! www.colorschemedesigner.com

I love to mix patterns, textures and time periods together – the results are always unique and unexpected. Mix it up, have fun and don’t be afraid to get creative. There isn’t a right or wrong way to do it. Here is some advice to get you started:

When mixing patterns, it is always a good idea to pay attention to pattern scale. For example: small, medium and large prints work better than mixing several small patterns together. Simply put, a large dot print mixed with a small pinstripe works better than small dots and small pinstripes.

Textures can be paired together quite easily but keep in mind it works best if there is a variety of smooth to course fabrics. An example might be leather, velvet and chenille paired within the same space.

Mixing vintage and new together is a personal choice. Since vintage items have a history, they can add soul to a room that a new piece can’t match. I encourage you to keep your eyes open, you never know when a great piece will present itself.

I hope that each time you open your front door you feel inspired!

As an artist, I strive to create environments that inspire the eye and the soul. A home should reflect the owners personality, desires and hopes. It is my pleasure to help put the person in the space, otherwise it’s just a space.

I LOVE COLOR!! It is one of the most powerful design elements and can change our perception of reality. In nature color exists in perfect harmony and balance, but it seems a mystery when we try to bring it in doors. What better time to observe color and all it’s beautiful than Spring? Keep your eyes open, inspiration is all around you. To demystify color and all the challenges that come when trying to select the perfect color, it is important to remember there are really only 6 colors to choose from: Red, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Purple and Green. All other colors are variations of the six. Since each color palette evokes emotions and feelings, we each have a palette or two we are attracted to. For me, my favorites are the green and yellow palettes. When I work with my clients, this is always where I begin a color consultant. Here are a few color tips:

Complimentary colors are colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, such as red/green, blue/orange, purple/yellow. Complimentary color schemes have a more energetic feel, more “pop”. The high contrast between the colors creates a vibrant look.

Analogous colors are colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel. Some examples are green, yellow green, and yellow. Analogous color schemes are often found in nature and are pleasing to the eye.

Monochromatic color schemes consist of different values (tints and shades) of one single color. These color schemes are soothing and authoritative.

Instead of looking at the thousands of color swatches in the paint store, it works best to select your palette first. I always begin with fabrics as there are infinite choices in paint colors and they can be custom made to coordinate with the fabrics selected. This process narrows the selections and confusion that come from too many choices. Remember to observe nature and her endless color combinations. Have fun, and be creative!

Test your colors: be sure to take a look at fabric and paint swatches in the environment in which they will be placed. View the colors at different times of day, paying close attention to the colors during the time you are most in the space.

What if you could use what you already have to create a great space? Finding beauty in what you have means looking at things differently. Sometimes it means a fresh set of eyes; perhaps a friend.

Often when I meet with my clients I find that they have treasures just waiting to be discovered. In my design work, part of being environmentally responsible is re-designing things my client’s already own. For the DIY’s, it can be incredibly rewarding taking the dresser you received from your grandmother that currently seats in the basement, refinishing it, adding interesting pulls and discovering it is worthy of the master bedroom.

For those that prefer someone else handling the stripping, finishing and upholstering there are resources available. My studio is located in Seattle, here are some of my favorites locally:

Wood stripping of furniture and cabinets: The furniture Spa in Ballard – www.furniturespa.com – every job is handled with care and the finished quality of work is of the utmost importance

Wood staining and finishing: Ballard Refinishers – www.ballardrefinishers.com – refinishing all wood surfaces for over 50 years

For most people, blogging has become such a basic part of their daily route that it may seem odd that I have labored over the idea for 2 years. I worried that it would be one more thing to take away from my creative time; would I have anything interesting to share and who would be reading anyway…. Then it occurred to me, it could be creative and a resource! As a designer and artist, I am blessed with the opportunity to create beauty for my clients and want my blog to do the same for my readers. My blogging goal, if there is such a thing, is to share design tips, resources and good finds weekly. I am always looking for great things for my clients, from the unique to great values. So as I take this grand step into the world of blogging to share my design inspirations and thoughts with you, I hope it connects and inspires my readers to get creative, and explore great resources to make their home uniquely theirs.

Please let me know if there is a topic or idea you would like to see covered. I will do my best to supply information to get your project up and running!
